El Alfabeto / The Alphabet
To start the year, we will work on el alfabeto español / the Spanish alphabet in both 2nd and 3rd grades. This will be new for the 2nd graders, and a review for the 3rd graders. It's important for the students to recognize the Spanish letters and to know their sounds. Most of the letters have the same sound as in English, but there are a few tricky ones, and we will spend quite a bit of time going over those because we will be working more on reading and writing in Spanish.
One of the keys to being able to read, write and spell in Spanish is to know las vocales / the vowels. They are the same letters as in English, but their sound is very different, except the letter O, which is the only one that is exactly the same. But what is interesting is that the vowel name in the Spanish alphabet is also it's sound that it makes in every word that it is in! In English, these same 5 vowels have 14 different sounds, whereas in Spanish, the 5 vowels have only 5 sounds!!
